Opinions?

I'm on a mission to fill my closet with clothes I love and not crap I bought just because it was on sale. As a result, I've made quiiiiite a bit of money on thredUP. This money pays for the clothes I love that replace the ones I don't even like all that much.

You saw my thredUp order on Wednesday. I kept only two things from it, a scarf and a dress. First, let's take a look at my Old Navy order. I think I will keep only two things, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. (In truth, I only bought what I did in order to get free shipping! Don't we all?)

I'll start with what I plan to return unless you convince me otherwise.

(P.S. Old Navy is having a 30% off sale right now in case you want any of these items for yourself.)

The Sweater
I know it looks cute, but, good gosh, I do NOT need another striped anything, especially black and white stripes. Plus, it ended up being $20, and that's just too much for something I don't need. It fits really well and looks cute with these pants. However, instead of keeping it, I will just use this picture as inspiration for another outfit with my black and white striped top.
You can find it here. (It looks gray in the picture, but it's definitely black.)

The Dress
It's a very cute dress, and it's not hoochie short. It wasn't a steep price, but I need another black dress like I need a hole in the head. In case you're wondering, I'm 5'6" with a booty, so it's still long enough despite those factors. It's soft and remixable. I just don't need it. Find it here.

By the way, I just bought the burgundy wedges from Aerosoles, and they are so comfortable. I wore them all day to teach and even to a doctor's appointment. And Ulta. And my feet didn't hurt! They give a 15% discount to teachers. (No, I didn't realize Aerosoles made cute shoes and not just old lady shoes.) Want 'em? Get 'em here.

The Leopard Cardigan
Don't even try to dissuade me from keeping this cardigan. First of all, I've been looking for a printed cardigan because most of mine are solid-colored. I also wanted a leopard cardigan; I just didn't want it to be cheesy looking. Maybe you hate it, but I love it. No way is it going back. Just look at the next outfit.

I even created another look for you; it comes to you with a dog butt, too. The cardigan isn't in stores as far as I know, but it's here online.

The Pink Cardigan
At first, I thought it was too long, and then I remembered my favorite black, thick cardigan and how much I wear that thing. I realized I actually love the length, and I can't stop wearing blush. I might have a problem, quite honestly. Once I styled it a few ways, it sold me. Am I wearing rose-colored glasses, and I should return it?

Here's another look with it. I think I'll wear it for casual Friday tomorrow.

  1. I was soooooo disappointed with the money I got from ThredUp for selling. I sent like 15 things and they took like ten and gave me $14.50. One dress was prices at $18.50, so I pretty much got screwed. I love the pieces I've gotten from there but won't sell again :( *priced oops

  2. I love that leopard cardigan! Definitely a keep! I also like the black dress, but I can totally understand not needing another black dress.
The flats in your last outfit photo are super-duper cute--where did you get them?

  3. I think if you have multiple ways of wearing the cardigan then you should keep it. I just bought a pair of "joggers" that I thought I had rose colored glasses for, but after a few different looks, I decided they were keepers. Those Aerosoles are pretty nifty. I've had a pair of similar colored heels on my wishlist but now I'm wondering if wedges wouldn't be a better choice? Decisions decisions.

  4. I agree with your decisions! The striped sweater and the dress are really cute, but they aren't particularly special, so if you already have similar items, you probably don't need to keep them.

Definitely keep the leopard cardigan! I had been looking for one for at least 2 years when I found one that I liked from H&M. And I think I even linked to this Old Navy one earlier this week as a nice option. Leopard print is so hard to find in a good color/pattern, so I'm always excited when I find something that looks good!

I think I have that blush cardigan in cobalt and coral. I don't wear them very often, and should probably get rid of them. They got pilly pretty quick. So that's something to consider. But it is really pretty, so if you think you'd wear it a lot, it might be worth keeping!

Questions for you about Thredup - do they have any rules about seasons? I try to take things to my local consignment shop, but she's only taking fall stuff right now. I have some summery stuff that I'd like to go ahead and get rid of. Also, how often to they reject something? I'm worried that I will send them a big bag of things, and they'll only accept a few. So I'd rather take my chances with consignment, where I get to keep the rejects. (I realize this is unreasonable, because I shouldn't keep things that I've decided to get rid of, but sometimes the idea of getting a few bucks helps me let go).

  5. Keep that blush cardigan! I LOVE it with the scarf in the last look especially. I have a few cardigans that length and I really love them, plus the lighter color makes it more versatile for different seasons. I've got some credit at ThredUp (not much though) and I haven't gotten anything with it because lately I've felt too overwhelmed by the wide selection and searching process. There's just too much!
Oh, and I kinda really really do want to get those maroon wedges now. I have a cute pair of Aerosoles wedges and they are SO comfortable!

  6. So your post got me thinking. Your first sentence especially. That is what I want most out of my wardrobe. I am stuck in the cycle of wanting to buy EVERYTHING all the damn time and that feeling of wanting new clothes never goes away. But then I look in my closet and am unsatisfied with what I see. There are a handful of LOVES, a larger handful of likes, and a small-ish pile of items I could live without. Then there are items that I only have until I find a replacement. Instead of being on the active hunt for those replacements only, I keep buying cute things at thrift stores or buying more fun things that catch my eye right away. Then I don't instead spend that money on a few nice items that I really want.

Last night, I had another closet purge and set aside some items that I'd like to use for a Reverse 30x30 like you did to try them one more time before donating them. Then I sorted a large stack of items that need to be altered (mostly jeans) and deciding whether or not to try to alter them myself or pay for them to fit the way I want. I'm so afraid to trust my clothes to an unknown tailor, as silly as that sounds. But after all that, I still feel unsatisfied. I feel like I'm missing basics. The problem with that is I have no idea where to start my search. You certainly don't find basics in thrift stores because who gets rid of their basics? Then it's deciding what those basics are. I feel like Fran has it completely figured out. She has a closet of great basics, everything matches, and she always looks amazing but still comfortable. I think you are the same way. You always look amazing, every outfit is adorable, and you have a ton of reliable basics. Do you have any tips on how to get started on basics? Phew, if you made it to the end, thank you!

  7. I really like the blush cardigan, especially how you styled it in the last picture! Also that leopard cardigan is fantastic!

I am in that boat right now where I can't say no to a good deal. I've been looking back on the things I've purchased since I've started keeping record of it on my blog and some things I wore once and never wore again! Probably a mix of the item being a good deal and getting it so I'd have something to write about on my blog. I did a pretty good-sized closet purge a couple months ago, but I think I really need to do one again, especially with the start of a new season and seeing what I did or didn't wear during the summer. Also, I've started keeping a list on my phone of specific items I'm looking for, so when I'm shopping I will [hopefully!] stick to the list rather than get a random top just because it's $3. It seemed to work for me for the past month, so hopefully I can keep it up!

  8. YES! You definitely kept the right items! I have debated about getting a leopard print cardigan for a long time, but haven't been able to find one with a print (and a price tag) that I like. This one is spot on (oh lordy, sorry for the horrible pun). I have been having a love affair with blush as well - I think it's so pretty and delicate and perfect...and it goes with basically everything! I love all of the outfits you created with each cardigan!

I am totally with you on wanting to fill my closet with things that I love and will wear happily rather than keeping things around that were just cute or are taking up space in my closet. I feel like that's a huge reason why I decided to do a shopping freeze. I had gotten into this horrible pattern of buying things off the clearance rack that were merely okay, but that didn't match my personal style. I still have some of those things hanging around my closet right now, but since I'm not really adding things, I'm afraid of getting rid of too much for fear of "not having enough." However, if I'm not wearing these things anyway, I probably should just get rid of them...ah! Why is it so hard to part with certain clothing items sometimes?! Even the things I don't really care for! Gah! [Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your post with that little stream of consciousness...]

  9. I actually completely agree with the items you chose to keep. The others were perfectly cute but not "WOW" enough to spend your hard-earned money on. I absolutely adore that blush cardigan. Blush is one of my favorite colors and I feel so happy when I wear it...so I think I need more of it in my closet. Perhaps I will add all things blush to my next quarterly budget wish list.
