Teacher Wardrobe Staples [Part 1]

This morning, my friend Nicole (girlfriend is gorgeous inside and out!) messaged me about must haves for her teacher closet. Our conversation got me thinking that it might be a good idea for me to write a series of  posts because women have asked me this question multiple times.

This series will comprise at least three posts:
Part 1: The Stores (today's post)
Part 2: The Basics
Part 3: The Outfits
Part 4: The Inspiration  (depends on you, the readers)

Part 4 is where YOU come in! E-mail me a picture of you wearing your favorite teacher outfit. If you're a blogger and the picture comes from a post on your blog, provide me with the link to the original content, please! If you're not a blogger, tell me how you'd prefer I credit you :)
I like to give credit where credit is due. If enough ladies e-mail me, I'll compile Part 4. If not, you might be stuck with pictures of just me for inspiration.

During your stay, keep a few things in mind:

1. I teach High School English, not elementary school like many of the teacher bloggers in blogland. I do not know if the needs of an elementary school teacher vary from someone in my leopard-print shoes.

2. I tried to create a list that should work for a stricter dress code policy, but know that my school's dress code is quite lax compared to other schools'.

3. If you're a new teacher or one looking to spruce up her wardrobe, you might find that you already have many of the items I'll be listing in this series. Hooray!

4. I link to plenty of outfits on this blog that show you the types of pieces you can buy from certain stores. Know that some of these outfits I did not wear to school, but the pieces could still work for the classroom.

5. I do not like to spend a lot of money on any one item because I usually never like anything enough (or long enough) for that to make sense.

6. There are a lot of great stores (LuLu's, SheInside, Ruche, and etc.) to shop at online, but I prefer trying items on in the store, so you'll see more of that sort of thing around here.

PART 1: THE STORES

Places I shop with success:

(The bulleted lists include what I typically buy at these places.)

The Limited (in store, they offer a teacher discount--bring your ID!)
ranges from $-$$$$ (with coupons, most items are under $100)

  • Everything from pants to blazers
  • I am especially drawn to their pants and skirts.
  • Some outfits that include pieces from The Limited: this cobalt blue skirt (and the lace top), my favorite skirt (A-line and khaki), and this tweed skirt (needs tights to be appropriate).
  • Note: unless their entire store is offering a 40% off promotion, you can use your teacher discount on top of clearance items!
Express
(pants are typically in the $50-100 range)
They've seemingly moved away from more work-appropriate gear, but I still love

  • their Editor pant
  • their blazers (my favorite cobalt blazer is from here)
  • Some outfits that include Express: this striped shirt
  • I don't shop here as often. However, most of my "wear me forever" pants are from Express.
LOFT (duh! They offer a teacher discount. Order the sticker from their website and slap it on your credit card.)
(most items are under $80)
New York & Company (they offer a teacher discount; just bring your teacher ID--I probably shop here the most because it's one of the only real stores in the "mall" near me, and I'm a lady of convenience.)
(most items are under $80, and they're great about having sales. I typically never have to spend more than $50 on anything here.)

Target (DOUBLE DUH!)
(I think you're well aware of how affordable the clothes here are.)
  • The pieces here do not last forever, but I've scored some good things at the ol' Tar-jay.
  • I am most drawn to their dresses, longer cardigans, and shirts. (If you want to try out skinny jeans on the cheap, Target is your place.)
  • I love their dresses. I have three of the same type (seen here and here), in fact. I always check the clearance rack for something with a cute print that I could mix with my other clothes.
  • Note: if you shop in the juniors section, be sure to size up unless you want things to fit too snugly, which is not a good idea if you're a teacher.
Old Navy (they have a teacher appreciation day, which I can never remember)
(Pretty great quality, and most of the pieces are less than $50.)
  • Old Navy has it all for the right price, and the outlets near me have even better prices.
  • I am especially drawn to Old Navy dresses, skirts, tops (button downs, specifically), and blazers/outerwear. They always have cute coats for a great price.
  • Some outfits from Old Navy include: this red blazer (dress must be worn with tights to remain appropriate), this gingham shirtthis jean blazerthis striped dress, and this striped dress.
  • You'll probably show up to school wearing the same thing as one of your students, but that's okay.
(If your mom poops coupons here like my mom does, then this place is perhaps more affordable than Target.)

GAP (does NOT offer a teacher's discount)
(Their sales seem to be better online and in the outlets.)
  • I really only go to GAP when I hit the outlets because it's not very close. However, I am drawn to their jeans (casual days, anyone?)
  • Some outfits that include GAP pieces: these neon jeans (which I can wear to school) and these green jeans.
Other Stores (not many pictures around these parts of the post):

Marshall's/TJ Maxx (mainly Marshall's because that's what lives near me)
  • I get a lot of my shoes here, especially Franco Sarto who happens to be my favorite shoe designer.
  • My favorite brand that shows up here is probably Kenar. Great durability, and they actually carry XS.
White House Black Market
  • Everything lasts forever, and my favorite white jeans are from here and so is my sequin skirt. It's too expensive for my piggy bank, so I shop here only periodically and always check the sales!
Forever21
  • Never the dresses or skirts because my booty makes everything 3 inches shorter than their already-too-short length. Some people have great luck with the length. I never do.
  • Cute blazers for great prices!
  • I have a few tops from here, too.
Banana Republic
  • Especially the outlet
  • Great pants and dresses!
  • Unless it's on sale, I typically won't get it. Again, their prices are a little too high for my tastes.
J.Crew (offers a teacher discount)
I would love to order something from J.Crew Factory, but it just hasn't happened.
  • Their stuff is gorgeous, but I just won't pay the prices. I have one item from J.Crew, and I bought it at the thrift shop.
  • They offer a teacher discount, which is great.
  • Maybe my goal will be to buy one thing from there before the year ends.
  • I think their skirts are especially great for teachers.
Shoes?
  • Nine West (usually at Marshall's)
  • Naturalizer (especially the outlet)
  • Target (for some flats)
  • DSW
  • Aerosoles
  • ModCloth
  • Found a really comfortable (and cute) pair from Easy Spirit. Go figure!
  • I really want to try  heels from Chromatic Gallerie because you can specify the heel height and there are SO MANY color options.
  • NOTE: I avoid any heel over 3" because it's impractical for me (don't want to break my face), but some women can rock it.

Favorite Places for Scarves?
  • Francesca's always has the cutest prints.
  • Target
  • Old Navy
  • Boscov's
Join me tomorrow for
Part 2: The Basics.

On Wednesday, my birthday, I'll give you
Part 3: The Outfits.

For now, I'll provide you with two collages of *what I hope is* inspiration.

If you're a teacher and you have some other stores to include, write them in the comments!
(If you have tips for your gotta-have-'em basics, save them for the comments section of tomorrow's post.) I tried to cover a lot here, but I'm sure I forgot a few things. I'll need your help to fill in the holes of my Swiss cheese brain.

If you want me to include a photo of one of your favorite teacher outfits (from your blog--you don't have to be a teacher; it can just be a teacher-worthy outfit), e-mail the picture and post link to me! If enough people send me pictures, I'll create a post solely for inspiration from fellow teachers.
E-mail me at:
teamwebchick@gmail.com

I hope this post was at least mildly useful.
Let me know if there is anything else you'd like to read in the series.
After all, I AM a teacher, which means I like to help :)

Polka Dots & Pink

I'm not a huge bubblegum pink fan, but this skirt was like $11 from Target. Need I say more?
I already owned [and loved] it in navy, so I stuffed it into my car full of a million other things I need but don't need from Target.

It happens to all of us. Target happens to all of us.

Do you ever find an item in your closet and think, "I like this, but I never wear this. What shall I wear with this?" And THEN, an idea bomb explodes in your face. You find just the right thing to complement it.
That's what happened with this polka dot shirt, which seems stupid because it's covered in polka dots. How hard is it to remember this shirt and find it a mate? Too difficult for my summer-sized brain.
Until now.

The Look:
Tank: Old Navy
Skirt: Target
Belt: Francesca's
Necklace: The husband.
I wish my selfie skills were better so that you could see my cute sandals.
(P.S. I don't like this outfit without a cardigan/jean jacket/etc. It feels unfinished.)

The Details:

Occasion: Cleaning/organizing/hazmating my classroom and then looking at an apartment
(So, I needed to be free for movement in my sweltering classroom, yet I could not look like a total slob for the apartment viewing appointment.)

When: noon-night

Where: Classroom (without students) and apartment complex

Restyling Options: I brought a cardigan with me in case we traveled somewhere chilly. (I never know if a classroom will be arctic cold or Sahara hot. Layers are key.) I think a navy blazer would be C-U-T-E with this look, especially if students were in my classroom. If I weren't wearing it for work and needed a little warmth, a jean jacket would fit the bill. Instead of the polka dot top (or over the polka dot top), I'd love a light blue oxford.
What are your restyling options for any of these pieces?

Pinspiration:
(source is difficult to find, but this is the best I could do)
Love the stripes, statement necklace, and trench.
Good grief, I could never wear those heels.

The chic-as-always, Blair

Friday Fay-vo-rites

Typically, a little black rain cloud (hooovering over the hooooney treeee--Pooh Bear, anyone?) spits rain on me. There was that whole week this summer I fell ill with one thing, that caused another thing, that led me to a medication which caused another thing, and then I missed that reeeally fun thing because of it all.  However, I think I usually succeed in keeping a positive--and dare I say humorous?-- attitude about it.

I guess a positive attitude gives the good luck fairy a high five so awesome that she can't ignore you for much longer. Let me tell you what. Lady Luck can give a return high five that rivals a Michael Jordan dunk (is that even a relevant sports analogy anymore? I don't know. I come from a mother who mixed up Tim Tebow with Tim TiVo.)

Anyway, a series of fortunate events have skipped my way, so I'm participating in High Five for Friday and Fridays Fab Favorites. And all of that jazz.

1. Before the school year let out, I won a giveaway (hosted by the best-complexion-I've-ever-seen blogger Kimberly and provided by Cult of Progression) for $100 at Marshall's! Be still, my tiny heart.
I have yet to spend it all, but, so far, I've bought:

these shoes...

and this skirt!
(and some poop bags for the dogs, but I'll spare you those pictures.)

2. Recently, I entered another giveaway over at Megan's blog, Style Me Swanky. (Girlfriend has awesome hair and such sophisticated style! She lives up to the blog name, fo sho.) Anyway, I won a pair of Joules wellies, and I am SO EXCITED for them to arrive. The company's representative who's corresponding with me is originally from Maryland, my state, which makes me happy about this small world we inhabit. Which boots did I pick? I'LL SHOW YOU.
Look at these beauties:

I fully intend to wear them even when it's a balmy 95 without a chance of sprinkles.
I'll romp through imaginary puddles. And like it.
Check them out here.
(They now ship to the U.S.!)

3. I finally found the perfect cobalt heels for me. (I decided that I wanted heels in a fun color. Since I wear my cobalt flats on repeat, I decided cobalt heels would be perfect.) Best part? I got a Kohl's coupon at Staples (still confuses me), which I used toward these wedges. BAM.
Find them here

4. My class lists finally went live online. I found out that I'll be teaching two of my very favorite students from two years ago. With this glorious factoid in mind, I think I might just be able to handle 11AP. (It's my eighth year of teaching but my first year with AP. YIKES.)

5. As you know (and are sick of hearing...reading?), we're staging the house to sell. My dear, sweet husband thinks that entails painting the entire basement, which means I had to buy paint. Two incredible things happened during this process. The first? The guy at Lowes gave me $7 off each gallon even though there was no promotion running at the time. (Hooray for being a pleasant customer!) The second? Jeff actually helped me paint the basement bathroom. I'm still in shock. And you know what the best part was? It was FUN, especially when he accidentally planted his entire palm on a wet wall. I didn't realize how much better painting is with a partner.

Even if the little black rain cloud splits wide open and pours on my head, I can't help but feel grateful for all of the little (and big), wonderful things of life.

Before I Blogged...

I think I knew more about style when I was a young lass who thought construction boots from Payless, flannel shirts, and leggings with stirrups were staple closet items. (Okay, flannel shirts totally still are.) On a weekly basis, I strutted my stuff in bell bottom leggings (oh, they exist), and, hot diggity dog, did I think I was the ish. And I was. You know why? Because I dressed how I wanted to dress and threw caution to the sartorial wind. Yes, I should have reconsidered scrunchy socks and that awful shirt emblazoned with an enormous white daisy, but I rocked them all. I knew what I liked, and poo poo to the naysayers.

Tonight, I decided to cruise down the mean streets of iPhoto and take a gander at the girl before the blog. I'm not sure I ever thought about the entire "look" as much as I do now that I frequent this corner of the cybersphere. Until recently, I'd say that was a bad thing. I became too absorbed in this niche. I started finding (...aaaand buying...er, hoarding?) clothes that worked for others and not for me. I experienced a lot of buyer's remorse. I pined over much-too-expensive pieces that I previously never would've glanced at a second time. I wondered why my closet did not consist of 50% J.Crew items. I forgot what I liked about clothes, about my closet, about my sense of style.

And then I ran away from blogging for a month or so.

That time away made me realize that it's cool if I spend an entire week lounging in my sweatpants that begin to harbor one too many corn chip crumbs.  Not everyone has to like what I wear. If I can rock it like I used to rock flannels with leggings, then more power to me. Get down with my bad self. With that being said, I wore a few things that could've been improved by a few simple tweaks. That's what is cool about this neck of the cyberwoods: learning from others what you can put your own spin on without losing your sense of self.

Join me as I recount all of the things I knew and did not know before I blogged...

Before I blogged, I knew how to pose with foliage.
And how to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit.

Before I blogged, I knew how to rock a side part.
And cobalt with black.

Before I blogged, I knew about the skinny belt.

Before I blogged, I knew how to sport a statement necklace.

Before I blogged, I knew about tights with shorts.
But, I don't know if I had feet.

Before I blogged, I sometimes looked like a Playboy Bunny...on purpose.

Before I blogged, I knew about the cross-your-legs-while-standing pose.

Before I blogged, I knew that a husband was better arm candy than any purse.

And then this happened...
(I make a pretty sweet Beetlejuice. I know.)

Before I blogged, I knew how to Photoshop.

But, did I know how to dance?
(At least my blazer is cute.)

And, of course, I've always had class.

So, riddle me this: what did you know or not know before you started blogging?
